Fixing A Smelly House

April 22, 2009

I don't know about you, but after an entire Columbus winter of four people living in close quarters, things start to get a little smelly in our house. Especially when two of those people are little ones, one of which is still using diapers. The house has been shut tight, with rugs and caulk shoved into any possible crack that might allow fresh (cold) air in, so it's no wonder that any smells from the past few months have been trapped in the carpets, the furniture and the walls.

There's a reason why they call it spring cleaning, though. This weekend the temperature is supposed to get into the 80 degree range, and I have plans to open all the doors and windows to let some spring air in to help freshen up our house. To clean the carpets, I'm using a carpet deodorizer to remove unwanted smells. For the kitchen, a vinegar and water solution often works great to remove bad odors from countertops and the garbage disposal. I generally avoid room deodorizers unless they're scented candles, because many of the scents are too strong for my sensitive nose.

The Battle against Weight Bias: Interview with Emme

February 23, 2009

Several of our City Editors recently had the great pleasure of participating in an interview with Emme, the supermodel and nationally recognized body image and self esteem advocate. Emme has twice been selected as People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful Women.

Emme is working with Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity to educate our country about weight bias, weight discrimination and wants to share with you helpful ways to teach your children about the harmful effects of weightbias and how to support a child in your life who is the victim of such a horrible experience.

I am bringing you this interview as the week of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week begins. Please take a moment after reading this post to visit the site!

Finding Help When You Worry Something's Wrong

August 28, 2008

It was just over a year ago that I began searching for help for my daughter, Cordy. I realized that she was not the same as many kids her age, and started to worry that she had some kind of developmental problem. I also didn't know where to start in searching for that help. However, it only took me a little searching and a few phone calls to find all of the help I needed, and I'd like to share  Read more...

Special Adventures for Special Kids At the Columbus Library

June 05, 2008

Today is the last day of school for Columbus Public Schools, as well as several preschools around the city. While we all worry about what to do with our kids during the summer, those parents with special needs children have additional challenges. For those in special needs preschool programs, the end of school also signals the end of therapy for many. The change in routine is harder for  Read more...
